Filomena F. Campos PhD

[Scientist Profile] -

Dr. Filomena F. Campos is renowned for her work on cotton research in the Philippines. Her scientific studies led to the rapid development of a package of production technologies that benefitted the entire cotton industry in the country. She was also deeply involved in the research of industrial sunflower production as potential sources of edible oils and livestock feed.

Dr. Campos' awards includes: The Ayala Award for Outstanding Scientist, Botany in 1974; Presidential Award for Public Service in 1976; Woman of the World Award in 1983; and, the prestigious Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST) Gregorio Zara Award for Scientists in 1973.

Magdalena C. Cantoria PhD

[Scientist Profile] -

Dr. Magdalena C. Cantoria's researches focuses on the health particularly on the morphology, physiology and biochemistry of drug-producing plants. She has also done basic study on the pharmacognosy (the study the therapeutic substances) of agar, raulfia, datura, mint, and Piper species.

Dr. Cantoria received the Edwin Leigh Newcomb Award in pharmacognosy given by the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education in 1954, largely due to her paper on the morphology and anatomy of Rauvofia vomitoria Afz. In 1962, she received the Eward S. Mika Award for her work on Datura stramonium L., a highly toxic weed belonging to the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, extracts from which are used as hallucinogens. Dr. Cantoria is also a recipient of Phi Sigma awards for marked distinction in biology in 1951 and Most Outstanding Phi Sigman, 1977.

Clare R. Baltazar PhD

[Scientist Profile] -

Dr. Clare Baltazar is the author of Philippine Insects, the first authoritative text on insect fauna native to the Philippine archipelago. Her numerous works on insects, specially her pioneering research on the Philippine Hymenoptera are significant accomplishments in laying down the framework of insect control in the future.

Dr. Baltazar's other contributions to science are her discoveries of the 8 genus and one subgenus of Hymenoptera and her discoveries of 108 new species of the Philippine parasitic wasps. Because of these contributions, she received in 1980, the The Rizal Patria Award for Entomology.

Dr. Baltazar is a well recognized figure in the world of Entomology.

Lourdes J. Cruz PhD

[Scientist Profile] -

Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz's research has contributed to the understanding of the biochemistry of toxic peptides from the venom of the fish-hunting Conus marine snails. The characterization of over 50 biologically active peptides from the snail's venom had been made possible, in part, by her studies. Dr. Cruz was also responsible for the development of a variety of conotoxins used as tools for examining the activities of the human brain. W-conotoxin, for instance, is widely used for studying neural calcium channels. M-conotoxin, another one of her discoveries, is used to control muscular activity during examinations of biochemical events that happen in synapses.

Dr. Cruz's scientific awards include: National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Outstanding Young Scientist Award, 1981; National Research Council of the Philippines (NCRP) Achievement Award in Chemistry, 1982; and the Outstanding Women in the Nation's Service Award for Biochemistry, 1986.
